Yale NIMS Series (Retired)
The steps detailed in this document give instructions on how to access and complete the Yale NIMS Series courses. The steps include accessing and completing the course and taking its test.
This documentation displays screenshot examples from symplr Learning. Accessing the course from another learning management system may result in a slightly different experience, but the general steps are the same.
Note: These instructions are for an older version of this course that is no longer available for registration, but may still be completed by those who have already registered. To see the instructions for the most recent version of this course, please refer to the Yale NIMS 3.0 course instructions.
These instructions are applicable to the following courses:
-
Emergency Management for Health Care Facility Volunteers v2.0
-
Emergency Preparedness for Health Care with NIMS v2.0
-
Incident Command Systems for Health Care with NIMS v2.0
There are several navigation tools available as you work through course materials.
-
Table of Contents. The double-arrow icon in the upper-left corner provides a listing of all the topics in the current course. This menu is also displayed by selecting the TOC button at the bottom of the page. Selecting either option while the table of contents displays hides them from view again.
Selecting a topic from the list opens that topic in the course window.
You can also filter the table of contents if you need to find something quickly. Selecting the Magnifying Glass above the contents displays the Search field. Typing something and then selecting the arrow filters the table of contents down to any matching content.
Note: You cannot jump ahead to an advanced section without first viewing all the content before it.
-
Previous and Next Page. The Back and Next buttons display at the bottom of the page. They allow you to easily navigate backwards and forward through the pages in the course.
Tip: You can also click anywhere within the page content (that isn't a link or hover-over tip) to move ahead to the next slide.
-
Glossary. Selecting Glossary in the upper-right corner displays a glossary page containing several definitions of key terms. If you need a terminology refresher, give it a try!
Note: When viewing the Glossary page, the navigation and TOC buttons along the bottom of the page may disappear. In this situation, selecting the Return button () in the upper-right corner displays the previous page.
-
Hover-over tips. Any blue text provides you with additional details when you hover your cursor over it. If you see these segments, move your cursor over and give them a read!
-
Exiting the Course. Exit the course by closing the course window.
-
Stopping and Resuming your Lesson. Your progress is automatically saved. You can exit the course, and return right to where you left off without having to navigate through the lesson. Upon re-launching the course, it resumes from the last page you completed.
Once the course launches, proceed through to the end while reading the content on every slide. Selecting the Next arrow at the bottom of the page displays the next page. Keep going, while completing any practice questions as they come up.
When nearing the end, you may be presented with some practice scenarios and review questions. For more detail about these activities, please refer to the Complexity Scenarios and Review Questions section. The final test is presented after reaching the end of the course material.
Pass the final test by scoring 80% or greater. If you fail, the course remains in your To Do List. From there you can review the course and re-take the test as much as you need. Upon passing the course, it is moved to your Completed list.
While completing some of these courses, you may be prompted with two options for the Complexity Scenarios practice and review activity: one for large organizations, and one for small organizations.
The large organization section contains practice scenarios and review questions more typical of the challenges that may be faced at large organizations. Alternately, the small organization pathway contains practice scenarios and review questions more likely to be encountered by workers in smaller-scale facilities.
Note: When taking a course, only one version— the large or the small organization (not both!)— needs to be completed to achieve full credit.
Review questions serving as knowledge checks are peppered in at certain points. Your answers to these questions do not count against your overall course grade, so there's no need to worry if you happen to answer incorrectly.
These may consist of multiple choice questions, or scenarios where you must drag-and-drop responses in the correct order. Each page displays instructions as needed. Complete them and review the correct answers to strengthen your understanding of the subject matter.
The final test for the course is built into the lesson and can be taken after you have satisfied the course material review requirements (generally, this is met by proceeding to the conclusion page).
You must obtain a score of 80% or better on the test in order to pass the course. You have an unlimited number of attempts to pass the test, so if you fail, the course remains on your To Do List and you can retry as many times as you need.
-
Select the best answer to each question by selecting the circular button on the desired response.
-
Selecting Next submits your answer then displays the next question. If you answered correctly, a green notification displays along the bottom of the page. Good job!
If you answered incorrectly, a red notification displays and explains the correct choice.
If you need to exit the test before finishing, you can close the window- your progress is automatically saved. Upon reopening the course, it resumes your test from where you left off.
-
After answering all the questions, the Results Summary shows your final score, along with a summary of how many questions were answered correctly.
-
Selecting Continue displays the Course Completed page. From here, you can choose whether you want to save your course completion certificate as a PDF file, or print a hard copy. At this point, your assessment score is saved, and you may close the window if you don't need a copy of your certificate.
Note: This page displays by default when selecting Review from your Completed List. To review any previous content, you must open up the table of contents via the double-arrows in the upper-left corner and select the desired page.
If for some reason this page does not display, you can view it by selecting View Certificate from the table of contents, or by navigating to the end of the course. -
Whichever option is selected displays your certificate of completion. If choosing Print, there is a Print icon which enables you to print your certificate. If choosing PDF, a Download PDF icon displays instead. Selecting this downloads a PDF of your certificate to your machine.
-
Upon refreshing your Course Information page, the course, your final grade, and the date the course was finished are displayed, and the course is automatically moved to your Completed List.
Note: A course is only added to your Completed List if you passed its final test.
